If you’ve got a pool at home in New Zealand, you’ll know how important it is to keep it safe – especially if there are kids around. By law, most backyard pools need to be fully fenced, and over the last few years, glass pool fencing has become the go-to choice for a lot of Kiwi families.
It ticks the boxes for safety, but also looks clean, modern, and keeps your backyard feeling open. Still, plenty of people ask the same questions: Isn’t glass a bit risky? What if it breaks? Is it a pain to keep clean?
Let’s run through the facts and clear up some of the common worries.
A standard glass pool fence is made from toughened (tempered) glass or laminated glass, usually around 10–12mm thick.
Toughened glass is up to five times stronger than normal glass. If it ever does break, it shatters into blunt little pieces rather than sharp shards.
Laminated glass has a safety layer in the middle, which means even if it cracks, it stays in place instead of falling out.
Your gate system is just as important – that’s where a solid glass gate system with proper stainless steel or aluminium hardware comes in. It keeps the entry sturdy and makes sure little ones can’t just wander into the pool area.
The short answer – yes, as long as it’s done right.
Glass fences that meet the NZ Building Code are designed to handle knocks, bumps and years of Kiwi weather. Here’s why they’re safe:
Super strong panels – 12mm glass can handle serious pressure.
Meets NZ standards – every pool fence has to comply with NZS 8500, which is all about child safety.
No climbing points – height and spacing rules stop kids from getting over.
Quality fittings – strong hinges, posts and latches keep everything locked in tight.
So really, it’s not the glass you need to worry about – it’s making sure you buy from the right place and get it installed properly.
Wooden fences – cheaper upfront but can rot, warp, or need painting.
Metal fences – solid but block your view and can rust.
Glass fences – crystal clear, modern, low-maintenance and add value to your place.
If you’re also doing up a deck or balcony, you might want to check out our glass balustrades or handrails for a matching look.
Sure, glass fencing costs a bit more than timber or steel at the start. But with almost no upkeep, it pays off in the long run. Plus, it makes your property look sharper and can bump up the resale value.
Plenty of our customers also tie in matching shower units or DIY accessories to keep their home looking consistent.
Do kids get hurt if they run into the glass?
Not likely – toughened glass is built to take a hit. And if it ever breaks, it crumbles safely.
Doesn’t glass get dirty all the time?
You’ll get some water spots, but a quick wipe-down every now and then keeps it clear.
Do I need council sign-off?
Yep – every pool fence in NZ needs to comply with council rules.
Can I DIY it?
Honestly, don’t. Pool fencing is about safety and compliance. Best to get the pros in.
